On the 30th September 2010 two young ambassadors from Belmont Community Arts College travelled down to York to attend the Young Ambassadors conference.  The conference taught ambassadors about the Olympic Games and how they can promote it to younger children.  They also got to meet Olympic Gymnast Craig Heap.  Beth Metcalfe and Jonathan Hosler were representing to the whole of County Durham at the conference; Beth wrote a little summary of the day.

York was an experience. As we went in we were given our adidas kit and were split into groups and given a mentor for the day. We were told about our roles and what is expected for us over the next year and that’s what brings us to today. Anyway as the day went on we did various activities with our groups, the last hour was spent creating a young ambassadors dance, and even though my group didn’t win it was tremendous fun and a good laugh. I personally learnt a lot in York and was glad I was given the opportunity to go.  I won’t let Durham down with my young ambassador’s role!

On Friday the 8th of October Beth and Jonathan took an assembly at Pittington Primary School, giving information about the history of the Olympics and how to get involved with London 2012.  They also told the kids about their day in York and explained that sport could be beneficial for everyone; taking up roles such as coaching, playing and volunteering. The two ambassadors also launched a competition based around the Olympic and Paralympic Games.  Children are invited to write a poem based around the seven Olympic and Paralympic Values and the wining poem will be read out during the opening ceremony of the Durham City Mini Olympics on 29th June 2011.

The ambassadors are now beginning work with Annalisa Hopkins, SSP leadership and volunteering co-ordinator, to plan the Y10 leadership academy.  She said; ‘This is a very exciting opportunity for our young ambassadors to drive leadership forward in our partnership.  With young people at the helm, our leadership academy promises to be exciting, productive and successful’.
