Ludworth Primary School in Durham City had the privilege of being the first school to try out the brand new Curling session which is running every Monday from now until Easter at the Durham Winter Ice Rink. They are in the middle of their Health and Fitness week at school and took advantage of the offer to give their pupils an alternative sporting opportunity.

The outdoor rink in Durham have 16 Ailsa Craig granite Junior Curling Stones and brooms and have marked out targets on the ice for people to try out this intriguing Winter Olympic Sport. The Year 3 pupils were given a quick lesson on the throwing technique before launching into a game. Having watched the Olympic Games from Vancouver last week the pupils were delighted to be able to try out the sport for themselves and managed to get plenty of the stones "in the house".

Unfortunately Great Britain didn't win any curling medals in Vancouver but after today's session things are certainly looking more optimistic for the next Winter Olympics in four years time in Sochi, Russia.

Future events include a Curling Challenge day in association with the English Curling Association and the Royal Caledonian Curling Club on Thur 4th March, a Winter Olympic Competition for Durham Primary school pupils on Mon 15th March and a European Curling Challenge match between England, France and Hungary on Wed 24th March.
