A packed Freemans Quay Leisure centre welcomed all the school teams to the pool side.  Each school sport partnership area was represented by two schools making 12 schools in total.  St Margarets and Bluecoat competed from Durham City and on arrival they all looked exited and ready to go!  For each event there were two heats with the final placings being decided by time.  Each team member gained points for there team depending on where they finished and the team with the most points at the end were crowned champions!

There was a great atmosphere within the leisure centre and as each competitors name was called out before the start of a race they were able to wave to the crowd and receive a loud round of applause!  The gala kicked off with the Y5/6 girls 25m backstroke and it was a good start for our two representatives with St Maragarets coming first and Bluecoat coming a close second.  Each race was timed by special timing equipment that automatically stopped when they touched the side of the pool and showed up on the big scoreboard!  Which was great for the kids to experience what a professional gala would feel like!

There were 13 events in total ranging from backstroke, breastsroke to freestyle in all the age categories and ending with a relay cannon.   St Margarets and Bluecoat competed extremely well in all races.

The competitors broke for lunch while the final scores were counted.  For each individual race there were medals for first, second and third and every placed competitor was invited to get there medal and stand on the podium.  Then came the announcement of the overall winners!  Our Durham City represenatatives had done amazingly well with Bluecoat finishing 3rd and St Margarets finishing 1st!  Well done to everyone who took part especially St Margarets who are now County Champions!

The event was extremely well organised and was a great experience for all involved!
