SCORES of youngsters got in the swing of things for a special Primary School golf festival. Around 600 primary school children played a few holes to leave friends green with envy. The Tri Golf festival was held at Ramside Hall Golf Club and involved 20 different schools from the partnership in two competitions – one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

The golf club closed the driving range for the day and a lot of parents were able to come down to watch and were also able to use the facilities. We are always trying to develop sport within schools and give children the opportunity to try out new sports and learn new skills.

For most of the children it was the first chance they have had to try golf and it was a great opportunity to play at such a fantastic venue.  Students from Framwellgate School and Durham’s Gilesgate Sixth Form Centre were also trained to act as Sports Leaders for the festival and were on hand to help the young golfers master their putting skills.

The children who took part in the festival were all aged between 7 and 11 and two separate competitions were held for Years 3 – 4 and then Years 5 - 6. The children took part in lots of challenges like chipping the ball into hoops and over obstacles, hitting targets and putting as close to the hole as possible. they earned points for their school team on each activity, which were added up at the end of the day to determine the winners. West Rainton, Shincliffe, Pittington and Langley Moor school teams qualified for the County Finals played at Chester le Street. The first two schools did so well in this event that they qualified for the North East England Championships at Teeside University.
